About Excelsa

Excelsa is one of the rarest coffees you'll find from India. Produced using an anaerobic natural fermentation, this coffee develops exceptional fruit complexity while preserving its distinctive character. Excelsa accounts for well under 0.01% of India's coffee production, and only a handful of producers have mastered processing it to specialty standards. Unlike Arabica, Excelsa demands a completely different roasting approach, requiring a slower roast with extended development to unlock its full potential. The result is a remarkably layered cup with notes of fermented fruits, red wine, and dates, offering a rich sweetness, deep complexity, and an experience that's unmistakably unique. This is a rare expression of Indian specialty coffee, produced in extremely limited quantities.

Coffee Q&A

Monsoon Coffee Co.'s tasting notes for Excelsa lean toward Dates, Fermented Fruits and Red Wine. Flavor is subjective and shifts with roast freshness, grind size, and brew method, so your cup may vary.

Excelsa is a single-origin coffee, sourced from one origin rather than blended, so it reflects the character of that specific place.

Excelsa is suggested for Aeropress, French Press, Moka Pot, Pour Over and South Indian Filter. As a rule of thumb: espresso needs a fine grind, pour-over and drip a medium grind, and French press or cold brew a coarse grind. Dial in from there to taste.
