ICB Fortnight 14 · 10 Oct 2026
The Excelsa question.
Hello,
This is issue 14, and it starts with a coffee nobody can
agree on. In one week on r/IndiaCoffee, one drinker said
Blue Tokai's Nano X Excelsa tasted like a shoe. Another
rested it for 30 days and found fermented tamul while it
was hot and port wine once it cooled. In the same week,
five Coorg estate lots, one of them an Excelsa, went on
shelves in more than 400 stores across Greece and
Cyprus.
The directory now lists 18 Excelsas, and 11 of them are
fermented or experimental lots. Among arabicas, the
share is closer to one in four. So an argument about
what Excelsa tastes like is often an argument about
process as much as species. Also inside: a
cave-fermented Kerala Excelsa in the spotlight, a new
Hyderabad roaster, and three new guides. If you have
tried an Excelsa, the question at the end is for you.

Freshly Added
What's New on
ICB.
One roaster joined this fortnight (more on Percup below), so
the catalogue did most of the moving: 51 coffees added across
17 roasters.
The Bean Co Roasters
in Kolkata brought 20 of them, including a barrel-ferment run
of rum, wine, whiskey and brandy barrel lots, a
grape-fermented and a frozen-cherry-fermented coffee, plus two
monsooned lots.
Naivo added three
Ratnagiri Estate lots and
Blue Tokai added
Terroir Culture from the same estate. Ratnagiri lots from Blue
Tokai and Dancing Goat both drew reviews on r/IndiaCoffee this
fortnight.

Process first, again.
Of the 51 additions, 15 are fermented or experimental lots:
9 logged as experimental, 5 anaerobic and 1 carbonic
maceration. Five are washed. Another 19 do not list a
process at all.
Three more Excelsas.
Three Excelsas were listed this fortnight, taking the
directory to 18, and one of them is in the spotlight below.
Across the directory, Excelsa and liberica are mostly sold
as process showcases. Arabica is not.

Percup Coffee Roasters
Hyderabad, Telangana · coffees being added
Percup joined ICB from Hyderabad this fortnight. It
roasts in 1 kg batches on an Aillio Bullet R1 and works
with limited-lot, traceable Indian single origins rather
than commercial blends, including naturals from Anugraha
Estate, a woman-led organic farm in Kodaikanal. Its
sourcing is built around ethical and regenerative
farming. The coffees are still being added to the
directory, so the profile is the place to start.

Funky processing, and the notes that don't show up
A drinker who keeps returning to Indian coffee made a
careful argument. They have no problem with estates chasing
fermentation, since most coffee here is grown for yield and
disease resistance, and processing is how it builds
character. The complaint is narrower: the cup rarely
delivers what the bag promises. Their latest example was a
Wild Ferment lot from Home Blend, but the thread is about
how tasting notes get written, not about one roaster.

Specialty on a stipend
A student drinking two or three moka pot cups a day, at
about 20g each, gets through a 200g bag in a week, and asked
what is affordable beyond Café Coffee Day. Replies converged
on Hunkal Estate, and one person asked whether Hunkal had
recently raised its prices. Budget questions were the most
common topic in the sub this fortnight.

Question for you
Have you tried an Indian Excelsa yet, and did it taste like
the notes on the bag?
Most of the 18 Excelsas in the directory are fermented or
experimental lots, so it is hard to tell the species apart
from the process. Reply with either one: what the cup was
actually like, or whether the notes matched what you tasted.
